Writing Chapters with AI
Updated: February 2026
Chapter generation is one of fic.chat's core features. AI generates chapter prose that matches your story's style based on the chapter outline, character profiles, world settings, and planned foreshadowing. This guide covers how to use this feature effectively.
Prerequisites
Before generating a chapter, make sure:
- The chapter outline has been generated (the chapter node must have actual content, not be blank)
- Chapters must be generated in order: you need to complete Chapter 1 before generating Chapter 2, and so on
- No other chapter is currently being generated (the system handles one generation task at a time)
Generation Settings
In the 'Generate Chapter Content' panel in the AI Assistant, you can configure:
- Characters Involved: Select the main characters in this chapter β AI will more accurately portray their actions and thoughts
- Word Count Range: From 1k to 8k words. Set the length based on the chapter's importance
- Chapter Foreshadowing Tasks: Shows the foreshadowing tasks AI has planned for this chapter (read-only, handled automatically)
- Emphasized Foreshadowing: Optionally select existing foreshadowing threads to emphasize in this chapter
- Extra Requirements: Add specific instructions, e.g., 'the chapter ending should include a plot twist'
Generation Process
After clicking 'Generate Chapter', the system enters the generation queue. Generation may take 1-5 minutes depending on the target word count. During generation:
- The corresponding chapter in the outline tree will show a 'Generating' status badge
- You can navigate away β generation continues in the background
- Refresh the page after returning to see the generated result
Review and Regenerate
Once generation is complete, click the chapter node in the outline tree β the center area will show the full prose. If you're not satisfied with the result, use the 'Regenerate' option to replace it with new content.
